Lessons here can be from 1 hour long, at 35 per hour (Shared lesson 25 per hour). First introductory lesson needs to be 2 hours. Its possible to do half days, or to have a themed lesson, e.g. jumping, soft feel, liberty etc. If he travels to you there will be a travel charge, but we will divide that between people, should you get a few together for individual or joint lessons.

Charlie also will come to you for a specific reason; trailer-loading problems are a recurring theme!

The First Lesson. 2 hours

This is an example only. Every lesson is individual. The start point is governed by: -

1.     The riders experience and knowledge.

2.     The horses experience, age, physical capabilities and previous handling.

I begin with a brief discussion as to what the rider wants to achieve both for them and the horse. I explain why I begin with work on the ground. This is outlined in more detail in my First Steps Booklet.

Rider and horse interaction begins with: -

Step One

Explaining the horses body language and how he sees yours. Putting it into practise; will he stand still and allow you to rub and stroke all over, move around him and still feel comfortable? Learning to assess his mental state, is it:

Attentive/Interested?

Frightened/Anxious?

Defensive/Threatening?

Bored/Dull?

Pushy/Bargy?

Step Two

Moving the horse by Touch and achieving lightness

Step Three

Moving the horse by Rhythmic pressure until only a suggestion is required

Ridden Work

I usually start the riding with a halter. This is pretty scary for a lot of people so I explain the reasons why and demonstrate on the clients horse. I am very careful not to put the client in an anxious situation. In this first lesson I go into depth as to the foundation work, which is lateral flexibility and hind and forequarter yielding. I explain how to use the reins and your body with feel and precision. In this first lesson you will not move more than a few yards until I am sure you have got these foundations really good.

Most people find the time speeds by and go home just wanting to practise more and see their horse in a whole new light.
